Underrated weekend getaway destinations in Europe
If you live in Europe, you know how easy it is to go on weekend trips. Europe is one of the easiest places in the world to travel around in and you can easily cross countries by car or train. You don’t even have to take the flight (which is great if you want to be nice to the environment). But where should you go if you want to go on a weekend trip in Europe? There’s endless opportunities for you and it all depends on what you want to do, but here’s a few suggestions that you might or might not have thought of.
Kutaisi, Georgia
Georgia has quickly boomed as a tourist destination. It’s long been hidden from the outside world, but people are now discovering the beauty of Georgia. Most people favors Tbilisi, the capital city, but Kutaisi has just as much to offer. First of all, you can get really cheap flights to Kutaisi since the low budget airline Wizz Air flies there. Kutaisi is also perfectly located for those who wants to visit canyons or natural reserves. You can do day trips to amazing natural parks. Famous attractions such as Katshki Pillar, Okatse and Martvili Canyons and the Vardzia cave are within a short car drive. But don’t miss out on Kutaisi itself. It’s one of the oldest cities in the country and has some very impressive landmarks to explore. The surroundings are breathtaking too and it’ll feel like you’ve entered a fairytale once you’ve landed in Kutaisi.
Ljubljana, Slovenia
Strangely enough, Ljubljana still hasn’t been fully discovered by tourists, even though it’s one of Europe’s most charming and colorful cities. Slovenia’s capital city is gorgeous to look at and it’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a medieval world. You can eat world class cuisine here, visit museums, see the Ljubljana castle, do a free walking tour and learn more about the history of Ljubljana, and just walk around the city and marvel at all the picturesque buildings.
Helsinki, Finland
Helsinki is often overseen, but this Scandinavian cosmopolitan city has a lot to offer for those who goes here. Helsinki is a lively seaside city surrounded by tiny islands and breathtaking nature. Consider visiting during summer when the sun seems to never go down, the weather is mild and everyone’s outside. That’s when the city is the most lively. Psst.. Don’t miss visiting one of the Moomin Cafés where you can be served Moomin themed drinks and snacks while being surrounded by Moomin artwork.
